Saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica) is a small freshwater fish that exists in Portugal only in the Guadiana basin and is one of the most endangered species in Portugal.
One of the threats to the survival of the saramugo is the pressure caused by exotic species (species not belonging to the Portuguese fauna), at this moment distributed by most of the tributaries of the Guadiana river. This pressure occurs at the level of competition for space and food as well as direct predation of eggs, juveniles and adults. Saramugo needs all possible help to reduce the threat posed by exotic fish species.
During summer, the streams cease to run and only exist in small pools that serve as a refuge for aquatic organisms. Some of these are identified as places where there is a great abundance of exotic species, which coexist with native species such as the saramugo. It is in these places and under these conditions that the LIFE Saramugo Project foresees the removal of exotic species, with the objective of substantially reducing this threat.
In this context, between July 25 and September 16, LPN will carry out a set of actions of removal of exotic fish species, with the use of fishing nets, on the Vascão riverside.
