Between the International Day of Action for Rivers and Dams (March 14) and World Earth Day (April 22), GEOTA organized an initiative for the general public entitled to elect entities (individual or collective, private or public) that "affect the present and future of rivers in Portugal", for the assignment of a good practices award (Guarda-rios Good Practices) and another one of bad practices (Guarda-rios Bad Practices).
As a result, LPN's work with LIFE Saramugo was nominated and won the highest public vote in the category of Good Practices, thus gaining the Guarda-rios Good Practices Prize for the management of river ecosystems of high environmental value and with that for the conservation of habitats and associated species.
This nomination is an important acknowledgment of the actions to improve the conditions of saramugos natural habitat in the southeastern streams of Portugal, which are being carried out under the LIFE Saramugo Project, and will contribute to the dissemination of practices for the management of riparian habitats subject to several threats, which have a significant positive impact on the protection of several native species of threatened fish.
