Children explore saramugo’s habitat

The environmental education of LIFE Saramugo Project started in this academic year of 2015/2016. These actions involved pre-school students, 1st and 2nd cycle schools in the project intervention areas. Thus, 14 schools in the Municipalities of Arronches, Moura, Barrancos, Mértola, Almodôvar and Alcoutim participated in the environmental education activities of LIFE Saramugo, involving a total of 42 classes with 697 students.

In these actions two different but complementary approaches were applied. In a first approach, the visit to the school by the staff of the LIFE Project Saramugo allowed to present the saramugo, its main threats and the project that intends to preserve it.
For the students of the 1st and 2nd cycle a small presentation and games were carried out in the classroom to transmit knowledge about the biology and ecology of saramugo and the species that cohabit with it, as well as the role of saramugo in the habitat in which it is inserted. In the case of the students of the preschool it was decided to substitute the presentation by the story of a history with the help of the students themselves, addressing the same themes, but in a more interactive way.

The second approach took place in the third period, with a field trip to observe and experience, the saramugo’s habitat and the biodiversity associated with the rivers in good conservation status. There were aquatic macroinvertebrates, some fish, amphibians and birds.

It was also proposed to each class to decorate an extra-large model of saramugo, to stimulate the creativity and plastic expression of the children approaching the thematic of the species. Later these models will be exhibited as a "traveling exhibition" in each of the schools that have adopted the saramugo Project.

We hope that these awareness-raising actions will enable us to create an early sense of responsibility for the protection and conservation of our natural heritage and the most endangered species, particularly the threatened saramugo.
