The correct supervision and application of the legal framework, as well as the responsiveness of the responsible entities, especially in the areas of occurrence of saramugo, are crucial to minimize and even eliminate threats that threaten the survival of the species, as well as other native fish. In this sense, took place on July 2 and 4, respectively, in Portalegre and Mértola, training aimed at training entities associated with supervision and surveillance, in order to improve the efficiency of the application of the legal framework and its suitability for the conservation of saramugo and associated riverine habitat.
Taking LPN, ICNF and APA/ARH Alentejo as as trainers, several aspects related to the ecology of the species, the main threat factors, as well as the current legislation and its applicability, in particular, regarding the management of water resources, fishing and agro-livestock management were addressed. There was also an opportunity for some practical exercises, followed by debate, in which participants were able to discuss ways to act more precisely and effectively on concrete problems, such as unregulated fishing, the presence of livestock on waterlines and the capture of water and inert extraction.

The sessions were attended by 13 participants in Portalegre and 18 in Mértola, among GNR-SEPNA military, ICNF technicians and vigilants, APA-ARH Alentejo and DRAP Alentejo. This training action also resulted in a manual of procedures for the supervision and licensing of activities suitable for the conservation of saramugo, as well as a booklet with supporting legislation that will guide future inspection actions.
This training was carried out by the LIFE Saramugo Project team, and was supported by the Portalegre District Farmers Association (AADP) and the Guadiana Valley Natural Park (PNVG) in Mértola.
