Safara and Sto. Aleixo parish union become Saramugo guardians

LIFE Saramugo and LIFE Imperial Projects share some intervention areas, one of them being the Moura / Barrancos SCI overlay area and the Mourão / Moura / Barrancos SPA. In this case, the exchange between the two Projects resulted in a combination of efforts in the establishment of partnerships with local actors for the development of specific actions. As a result of this work, the Presidency of the Board of the Parish Union of Safara and Santo Aleixo da Restauração did not hesitate to accept the challenge and collaborate in the conservation of these two species and their habitats!

By defining a set of concrete habitat management measures and signing the respective collaboration protocols for its implementation, this Union of Parishes in the municipality of Moura will allow and assist in the holding of a recovery action on their properties of riverside vegetation in the Ribeira do Murtigão, in favor of the saramugo, and to establish rabbit units, the main prey of the imperial-Iberian eagle and that scarce in that region.

In addition, several informative panels on both Projects will be placed, in order to alert and raise awareness within the population to the need to conserve the unique natural heritage that occurs there.

In establishing this partnership, the Union of Parishes became thus "Guardian" of the saramugo and the imperial eagle, being an integral part of the Stewardship Networks of both Projects.

These actions will benefit not only the target species and the ecosystems to which they belong, but also the various activities developed in the region, while safeguarding the socio-economic interests of local populations and the conservation of natural values, with a common objective of enhancing the natural environment and rural areas.
