Scientific name: Lepomis gibbosus
Common name: Pumpkinseed
Description: Body compressed laterally and coated with large scales. The mouth is terminal and small. They have a single dorsal fin that divides into two distinct parts, the longer anterior is composed of rigid rays and the posterior of smaller, but higher, is composed of soft rays. The operculum ends in a spatula with a black spot embroidered in red. This red zone is reduced or even absent in females. It can reach 15cm in length, exceeding very rarely 30cm.
Breeding season: May-August (depends on water temperature 15-20ºC).
Diet: Preferably invertebrates, however it is opportunistic and their diet varies according to the frequency and abundance of prey. It can feed on vegetable debris and fish postures.
