Through this Action, information will be collected in order to characterize the present baseline situation of the saramugo populations in their historical distribution area on national territory, collecting data on the situation of the population and identifying threats, in order to compare the situation with that described in the previous LIFE Saramugo Project - LIFE97 NAT/P/004075 (LIFE97).
The practical result of Action A3 will be a global update of the distribution of the species, which will allow in the first place the assessment of the conservation status of the species at the national level, and will additionally provide a baseline reference for evaluating the concrete impact of the habitat management actions to be implemented during the project on the national saramugo population.
Concretely, this Action will:
• Assess the current distribution area of the species on Portuguese territory (Guadiana basin), updating prospected points with confirmed presence of the species in LIFE97;
• Determine relative species densities in prospected sites;
• Identify and characterize threatening factors on occurrence sites;
• Quantify the effective population of the saramugo.
