Action C3

Rehabilitation of the aquatic environment and hidromorfologic requalification

We intend to improve the habitat conditions for the saramugo in the intervention areas where there are integrity and adequacy problems in the habitat of this species. This Action should be seen as being part of a larger strategy for improving the condition of the habitat for the species in its natural and traditional occurrence environments.

The intervention typologies may be divided in two different sets: silt removal and restoration of riparian vegetation.

Two pools will have silt removed, through the removal of fine materials (which are not suitable for the saramugo), increasing the available volume of each pool, allowing a larger quantity of water to remain there in the summer months.

In terms of the restoration of riparian vegetation, the intervention will cover 4 km and follow two lines of action:

1- Fight against spots dominated by exotic and invasive vegetation and subsequent re-naturalization of the vegetation of watercourses.

2- Consolidation and diversification of vegetation layers (herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal) in the riparian galleries where degradation signs are evident.

The joint application of these two lines of action will allow the habitat quality to improve both at the trophic level and in providing shelter for the saramugo. It will also have additional effects in terms of providing shade (minimizing evapotranspiration) and creating micro-habitats in root systems suitable for shelter.
