Action C2

Minimize the impact of cattle on watercourses

The main goal of this Action is to condition cattle access to streams where the saramugo is found, by setting up fences and improving tree and shrub cover of the riparian vegetation curtain in areas with lack of vegetation and which are contiguous to livestock farms.

Taking into account that this conditioning will only be successful with the cooperation of landowners and farm managers, it is necessary that in some situations, alternative livestock watering options are made available. The foreseen alternatives include the construction of small watering pools in the seepage lines of the property or through the installation of troughs for animals in order to avoid direct access of livestock to watercourses.

There are situations of high degradation where it will be necessary to intervene by planting typical riparian plant species in saramugo habitat, such as oleander (Nerium oleander), tamuje (Flueggea tinctoria), tamarisk (Tamarix sp.), myrtle (Myrtus communis), ash (Fraxinus sp.), willow (Salix sp.) and poplar (Populus sp.).

It is foreseen that these interventions will take place in the streams affected by the greatest pressure from livestock farms on the riparian ecosystems, namely the streams of the Ardila sub-basin inside the SCI Moura/Barrancos, specifically the streams of Safareja and Murtigão.
